Faith in Action is an interfaith volunteer caregiving initiative of the Robert
Wood Johnson Foundation. Local Faith in Action programs bring together
volunteers from many faith backgrounds to work together to care for their
neighbors who have long-term health needs.
Faith in Action volunteers come from all faith backgrounds as well as the
community at large. Volunteers help those in need by providing non-medical
assistance with tasks such as:
 | | Picking up a few groceries or running errands
|
 | | Providing a ride to the doctor
|
 | | Friendly visiting (talking and listening)
|
 | | Reading or helping to pay bills.
|
With this volunteer assistance, members of the community who have long-term
health needs can maintain their independence for as long as possible.
Serves: Marathon County residents who are age 60 or older or are disabled
and receiving SSDI.
Services: Bill Paying, Assistance with Paperwork, Friendly Visiting,
Housekeeping, Short-Term Respite Care, Shopping with or for a person,
Telephone Reassurance Calls, Medical Transportation, and Construction of
Handicap Access Ramps
Summer Hours (thru Sept 7, 2009): Mon - Thurs 10 am- 2 pm

She was matched with Joy, who at first provided transportation for Violet as she
needed it. Soon she was visiting Violet several times a month. They developed a
great friendship. Joy began calling to check in on Violet regularly.
They were soon sharing lunch and shopping together. No longer stuck at home,
Violet was now able to get to the doctor, the grocery store and to other
locations to do errands without feeling like a burden. She was able to visit with Joy
and see her very much as a friend rather than just a ride from here to there.
Joy has helped Violet to see that people care about her and enjoy her company.
Violet looks forward to the time that she spends with Joy, because it gives her hope
and it is always fun!
In addition to being matched with Joy, Violet has becoming aware of senior groups
that are meeting in the Wausau area through the Faith in Action newsletter.
Another volunteer brings her to the monthly meetings where Violet can interact with
other seniors. It helps to combat her loneliness and gives her an opportunity to
volunteer as well.
She helps out with the program by assisting other seniors and making goodies to
share at the meetings. Violet has stated that she is very happy with the volunteers
and the services that she has received through Faith in Action. She says that she
always tells everyone she meets that Faith in Action can help them too!
YOU can help people like Violet too. Contact Faith in Action today to learn how!
Violet, an elderly carereceiver, no
longer able to drive due to health
concerns, had to find
other means of transportation.
Because the cost of cabs was
prohibitive, and due to
health issues she was unable to take
public transportation, she had to limit
her trips to necessities only.
Not being able to get to the grocery
store and to the doctor was making
her quite depressed. In addition, she
was beginning to feel very isolated
and alone. She did not have any
family members nearby to provide
the assistance that she needed.
A friend referred her to Faith in Action.
