Digital Television Conversion
The Senate voted to delay until June 12 the deadline for the changeover from analog to
digital television broadcasting. More legislation is being readied in the House, and the
Obama Administration has called for a delay due to concerns that too many Americans
won’t be ready. They are also working on getting more funding to provide more coupons
as well. The transition which was scheduled for midnight on February 17, 2009, will be
delayed until June.
At that time all full-power television stations in the United States will stop broadcasting in
analog and switch to 100% digital broadcasting. Digital broadcasting promises to provide
a clearer picture and more programming options and will free up airwaves for use by
emergency responders.
What you need to know:
At this time, (after June 12 you will need to have a converter if you don’t subscribe to a
service, such as cable) you do not need to change anything with your TV to continue to
receive a signal. A TV connected to cable, satellite or other pay tv service DOES NOT
REQUIRE a digital converter box now or by June 12.
Consumers have a variety of options.
Options to explore include:
1. Keep your existing analog TV and purchase a TV converter box. (A converter box costs
between $40 -$70). A converter box plugs into your TV and will keep it working after the
transition.
2. Connect to cable, satellite or other pay service by contacting your local provider.
3. Purchase a television with a digital tuner.
If you do not subscribe to cable, satellite or other pay tv service, and you have purchased
a converter box, you can contact Faith in Action if you need help connecting your digital
converter box .
If you would like to apply for a coupon for the converter box, contact our office and we will
send you the form.
